The Great American Drive
Day 5 - Billings, Montana to Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone National Park
October 6th 1999

Today's drive would lead into the Rocky Mountains and Yellowstone National Park. Early morning pancakes in Billings filled me up before heading back on the open road for some great views of the foothills before turning off onto Route 212. This was listed as the scenic route into Yellowstone on the AAA map, and scenic it was. This particular section of the Rockies is known as the Beartooth Mountains and has the claim of most beautiful highway in America. There were distant snow capped peaks, ragging rivers, and a very twisting highway going up to 10,000 feet with plenty of scenic overlook stops.

The end of the drive is at the North East entrance to Yellowstone National Park. I arrived a few hours before sunset, just enough time to hike to the bottom of Tower Falls and drive to Mammoth Hot Springs, my home for the night.

“Certainly, travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.”
