The Great American Drive
Day 8 - Yellowstone National Park to Grand Teton National Park
October 9th 1999

Checked out of Old Faithful Inn and started the drive to Grand Teton National Park, just south of Yellowstone.

Over the year I heard stories about how amazing the mountains of the Grand Teton Range are but no story or picture prepared me for the first view of these incredible mountains. At the first clearing along Jackson Lake the whole range is visible, soaring into the sky, partly obscured by the smoke of a distant fire, like something from a dream. It's as if the great American plains come to an abrupt halt and the Earth jumps thousands of feet. The afternoon was spent driving to along the mighty Teton Range to Jackson Hole.

A heard of Elk were migrating south. I attempted to follow them through the dense woods, but the Elk could see me and my tripod coming long before I could setup for a photo. The wind was howling through the high pines, causing the huge trees to sway in the wind.

By sunset I was checked into Jackson Lake Lodge, and planted myself in a chair for the sunset lightshow over Mt. Moran.
